Biography & Background

State Representative Karey Hanks (current Legislative District 35) was raised in Idaho Falls, a graduate of Idaho Falls High School. She attended Ricks College and graduated in 1978 with an Associate degree in Education. After taking time to raise a family, she enrolled at Brigham Young University-Idaho and fulfilled a personal goal, earning a Bachelor degree in Psychology in 2011.
Karey will celebrate her 44th wedding anniversary with her husband Burke in June 2022. They are the happy parents of 7 children and 17 grandchildren. Their home is in Egin Bench, where they have successfully run a farming operation for 34 years. Farming has taught her many valuable skills such as hard work, budgeting, scheduling and learning to operate many types of equipment. She has used her equipment knowledge and skills to drive semi trucks and 10 wheelers during harvest on her family farm as well as for Crapo Farms. She also has combined her truck driving skills and love for children to help Fremont School District as a bus driver.
Representative Hanks has served two terms in the Idaho House of Representatives. Whether land problems, tax-associated questions or road concerns, each issue presents new challenges and demands creativity and patience to solve. Karey works hard with others to develop reasonable solutions. She is a founding member of the Idaho Freedom Caucus and has supported the Idaho Conservative Agenda (2021/2022).
Karey is a member of the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, and has completed several training classes. Her family enjoys target and skeet shooting and staying actively involved in protecting our 2nd Amendment rights.
Karey has served her community as a Boy/Cub scout leader and faith representative at the Juvenile Correction Center (JCC). She has also been involved with other service opportunities, including an internship at the JCC while in college and chairing committees to build elaborate floats for the Pioneer Day parades in St. Anthony. Karey has been active in the Fremont County Republican Central Committee and the Fremont County Republican Women for many years, and is currently a member of the Jefferson County Republican Women.
She has completed four triathlons, and her hobbies include skiing, biking, sewing, and baking (especially with her grandchildren’s help).

Top 3 Issues:

1. Government overreach, at the federal, state and local levels, affects our individual and parental rights. We have seen a massive control grab the past 2 years with regard to personal medical information, health rights and the ability to choose our risk level (mask/vax mandates). Small businesses deemed “non-essential” affected our entrepreneurs and families. Government overreach affects every aspect of our lives!
2. Tax cuts! We began the 2022 legislative session with a nearly $2 BILLION budget surplus. I have championed grocery tax repeal, that would give 6% in immediate relief to our families’ budgets. This is especially necessary as inflation rises. Karey supports good property tax reform that will really help our citizens. Idaho government agencies and departments continue to receive increases to their budgets, but very little money has been returned to our hardworking taxpayers.
3. Our 1st and 2nd amendment rights are especially important as we experience the amount of control our multiple levels of government are attempting to exert over us. Without our right to keep and bear arms, it may be impossible to retain other rights, such as: freedom to exercise religion, speech and press, peaceably assemble or petition our government for a redress of grievances. These rights all must be protected and preserved in order for us to pursue life, liberty and happiness.
