Jon Cantamessa

State Senator Legislative District 2

Biography & Background

I was born in Wallace, Idaho and have lived in Wallace my entire life. I graduated from Wallace High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Washington. I have been married for 55 years and have three children, eight grandchildren, and one great grandson.
My grandfather on my father’s side came to the America from Italy alone in 1912 when he was 18 years old. He became an American citizen, served in the U.S. Army, started his family, and opened a small grocery store in Wallace in 1925. That small store that he opened grew over the years and was later run by my father and eventually by myself and supported our family for 92 years.
My public life over the years was very typical for a small businessman in a small community. Member of the Chamber of Commerce, past Board member and past president. Member of the local Economic Development Board for over 20 years. Member of the Wallace Elks Club #331 for 56 years where I was honored in 2001 to be named the Idaho State Elk of the Year. I was elected to and served 7 years on the Wallace School Board, 3years as chairman. I served on the Basin Environmental Improvement Project Commission as chairman for 4 years overseeing the Superfund clean-up in the Silver Valley. I served as chairman for 10 years of US Forest Service’s Resource Advisory Committee for Idaho’s five northern counties. I was elected as a County Commissioner for Shoshone County and served for 12 years.
I am running for the Idaho Senate to represent the rural counties of northern Idaho. I will be a senator that keeps in contact with all communities in my district and will vote with direction from the citizens in District 2.

Top 3 Issues:

1. To keep our legislature focused on what the people want and need, including eliminating existing laws that are no longer necessary.
2. Infrastructure. This past winter has been exceptionally destructive to our rural roads in Legislative District 2.
3. Expanding economic opportunities for our rural counties. The economic impacts of the Covid guidance has weakened, and in many cases closed small business in our rural Counties.
