State Senator Legislative District 7

Biography & Background

As the District 7 State Senator, I believe in preserving our conservative Idaho way of life, and trying to run your government like a business. These are the things I’ve campaigned on, and the things I have done as a State Senator.

I value the lifestyle of our families and neighbors in Idaho, Adams and Nez Perce counties. This is preserved with effective leadership in Boise on your behalf. We are the, “little guy,” we are not from the big cities of Idaho. We have to work harder and be tougher than the rest. Those in Boise will tell you I am a very worthy adversary. I will not only fight, but I will win. Not with big noise, but big results.

With hundreds of miles between us and the Capitol, it is critical that you know I will make sure your message of fiscal conservatism and limited government is heard in Boise. It is critical that we hold our state agencies accountable, and we must require outcome-based results.

I have worked both in the public and private sector, with most of my time being spent on our ranch in Grangeville. My wife Carolyn, and I, work together in our registered beef cattle and small livestock trucking businesses. I was the president of the Idaho Cattle Association, the Idaho Beef Council, the National Cattleman’s Beef Board, and the National Cattleman’s Beef board of directors, chairing two national committees. In my government work, I have worked at the county level in weed control and at the state level as a University of Idaho extension agent who managed the Idaho County 4-H program. During that time, I created one of the strongest 4-H programs in Idaho.

I believe my background has shown that I know how government works and how business gets done. This unique blend of experience allows me to understand how to run government like a business, which is an important part of being an effective state legislator. Most importantly, I know just how hard it is to make a dollar and just how easy it is to spend that dollar. Taxpayers deserve a Senator who will ensure our state funds are being spent with business caution and without government waste.

I appreciate your support to bring better government to our area and Idaho, as I represent each of you in District 7. Not just a loud voice…a strong voice.

Top 3 Issues:

1. Limited Government. I have a front row seat and input on all the budgets that come through the legislature in my role as Vice Chair on the state budget committee (JFAC). With a, “run it like a business,” attitude, we have made Idaho THE place to be for business and citizens. Conservative leadership, limited government, and fiscal responsibility have led Idaho to new economic heights. Any successful business owner knows it’s not necessarily the bad years that will tank you, it’s the good years. That’s why I’m opposed to expensive, extended commitments that will put us in a bind down the road. Like a good business, we need to pay any outstanding debt, put some money in our rainy-day funds, and make targeted capital investments in our operation. I was proud to vote in favor of this year’s historic income tax cut because I believe money is better spent by the taxpayer instead of the government. It’s also a goal of mine to make significant strides in property tax relief, with Idaho growing so dang fast!
2. Education. This is one of those targeted investments that I’m passionate about because investing in our children is investing in our future. But, it’s no secret that we’ve faced some serious issues in our schools. Recently, Critical Race Theory has reared its ugly head. That’s why, last year, I carried a bill to stop CRT. This was landmark legislation that has not been challenged or amended. It’s bad news and I have not, and will not, support CRT. This year I carried the 1776 resolution to ensure we’re teaching our kids the entire history of our great nation. We must celebrate America’s victories and acknowledge its disappointments. We all know there is no better teacher than a child’s own parents. However, in rural Idaho, that isn’t happening, and our students are falling behind urban students. I am a proponent of optional all-day kindergarten. A bill I helped draft allows districts to make the decision to opt-in at the local level. This allows parental involvement in their child’s education. If a district opts-in, we’ve identified that the state can responsibly fund that program. This is targeted and scaled property tax relief, as many districts are now levying for kindergarten. I’ve also worked with some incredible experts on a bill I sponsored this session about Dyslexia, which affects a child’s ability to read, and impacts 1 in 5 Idaho kids. Through a grassroots effort, with parents and the group Decoding Dyslexia Idaho, we got this bill through the legislature…at no additional cost!
3. Conservative Values. Our Founding Fathers knew the importance of protecting our personal freedoms. Two of those freedoms I will never shy away from defending are the 2nd Amendment and the Right to Life. I am a proud member of the NRA, with a solid record of defending our Second Amendment rights with an ”A,” rating. I will continue to uphold and protect the rights of firearm owners and oppose legislation that threatens to take those rights away from us. Additionally, I believe life is a precious gift, and it is the state’s duty to protect all lives. I promise to protect the rights of unborn children and be the voice of our most vulnerable population. My voting record demonstrates my commitment to these values. I plan to continue my efforts in this regard.
