ALLRED MISSES DEADLINE ON FILING HIS LOBBYIST REPORT

Democratic Candidate for Governor Keith Allred missed the deadline to file his 2009 annual lobbyist report with the Secretary of State. Allred registered with the Secretary of State as a lobbyist in 2009 for The Common Interest.

According to Idaho Code, any lobbyist registered under Section 67-6617 is required to file an annual report with the Secretary of State’s Office. Failure to file a report could result in a penalty of up to fifty dollars a day, at this point according to statute Allred could be subject to hundreds of dollars in fines. The Secretary of State office’s confirmed earlier today that Allred missed the filing deadline.

“I find it ironic that a lobbyist for an association which prides itself in advocating for an open government free of special interests has chosen to disregard our State’s sunshine laws,” stated Idaho Republican Party Executive Director Jonathan Parker. “These laws were created to police lobbyist activities. Ignoring them can cause citizens to lose faith in our democratic system.”

Risch Questions Administration on Christmas Day Bomber

Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Jim Risch questioned the administration on terror threats to the United States during a rare, open hearing of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence this week.

Risch asked Dennis Blair, Director of National Intelligence and Robert Mueller, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation about threats to the United States and specifically why accused Christmas-Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was read his Miranda rights.

“You didn’t need to give this guy Miranda in order to have a legitimate criminal prosecution. You had 200 witnesses who saw what he did. You didn’t need a confession,” Risch said. “Go ahead and interrogate him until the cows come home, because what you want that information for is intelligence. With all due respect, I think you lost some information that could have been very valuable to the American people.”

The complete exchange between Risch and Directors Blair and Mueller is available online at http://risch.senate.gov under the feature tab.

Risch Calls for Fiscal Restraint, Not Deficit-Raising Budget

Washington, DC—Citing a soaring national debt and growth in spending, U.S. Senator Jim Risch called the proposed 2011 budget released by the White House today out of touch with the American people.

“Last month the voters in the most liberal state clearly demonstrated they are tired of the borrow-and-spend policies coming out of Washington. Now, the president wants to move forward with business as usual—more taxes, more spending and more borrowing,” said Risch. “Our national debt is already more than $40,000 for every man, woman and child. Increasing that obligation by an additional 10 percent is not the kind of leadership Idaho and America need.”

The proposed budget calls for $3.8 trillion in total spending, an average increase of 5 percent for each federal agency—more than the current rate of inflation. Even after accounting for additional revenue from tax increases and new limits on deductions, it projects a $1.3 trillion deficit.

Risch, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, did note some items recognized as priorities in the budget proposal including research at the Idaho National Laboratory and support for nuclear energy.

“I am pleased the president recognizes the importance of nuclear power to our nation’s energy needs. Proper support and adequate funding for nuclear technologies has not yet been a priority of this administration, but this budget is a hopeful sign. Energy security and price stability is needed by business for future economic growth. I look forward to working with my colleagues to enact fiscally-responsible budgets for each of the federal agencies.”

CRAPO: RECORD DEFICITS RUIN BUDGET PROPOSAL

Washington, D.C. – Idaho Senator Mike Crapo, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, said today that three things are all Idahoans need to know about the Fiscal Year 2011 Budget Proposal released today by the White House: more spending, higher taxes and record deficits. Crapo said the proposal falls short of the spending restraint needed to address our skyrocketing debt.

“This budget proposes the opposite of what we need to revive the economy,” Crapo noted. “This proposal contains a record budget deficit of $1.56 trillion. It calls for $3.8 trillion in spending. It contains tax increases on working Americans and still pursues a government takeover of health care. Even with our fragile economy, and unemployment over 10 percent, the proposal would raise taxes on small businesses beginning in 2011. Our current level of debt, and the path of future debt that we are currently on, is both unsustainable and unacceptable.” Just last week, Crapo voted no as the Senate Majority approved a record debt increase to more than $14 trillion.

Crapo said the White House should provide increased incentives for job creation through tax policy, meaning tax relief, not tax increases. “There is a clear understanding that the worst thing we can do in times of recession is to increase taxes,” he noted. “Spending has surged well beyond our historic average of revenue, and that is the cause of our deficits.

“This budget would continue the expansion of government by means of a second stimulus plan, when there is considerable evidence that the first one added nearly $800 billion to our national debt with little benefit for the economy,” Crapo added. “We cannot spend ourselves into prosperity. More debt, higher deficits and more taxes are not the solution. We must encourage the efforts of the private sector to create jobs and not increase government. This budget will encounter very careful review in Congress and I encourage all Idahoans to review it closely.”

Crapo noted his support for some of the energy provisions in the budget to increase nuclear power generation by expanding loan guarantees, but he disagreed with plans to permanently close Yucca Mountain with no alternatives for the disposal of nuclear waste. “I appreciate that the Administration is trying to address the nuclear waste issue by appointing a Blue Ribbon Commission, and the membership of the panel is, on the whole, quite good,” Crapo noted. “However, that does not change the fact that having such a commission is unnecessary because the solution to our nuclear waste problem is obvious and clear. There is no scientific basis for closing Yucca Mountain; yet the Blue Ribbon Commission is prohibited from even considering Yucca Mountain as a possibility for future storage.”

IDAHO DELEGATION COMMENT ON HAITI ARRESTS

Washington, D.C. – Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, along with Congressmen Mike Simpson and Walt Minnick issued the following statement today regarding the arrest of several Idahoans in Haiti relating to child abduction charges. The Idahoans, members of the Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian and the East Side Baptist Church in Twin Falls, were part of a U.S. delegation seeking to provide safe housing for Haitian children displaced by the earthquake in Haiti.

“Our offices are often asked to intervene to help Idahoans and, while it is not customary to discuss any details because of constituent privacy, family members and church leadership have allowed us to comment on the situation,” delegation members said.

“We are in steady contact with the U.S. State Department and the U.S. offices in Port-au-Prince regarding the holding of the 10 Americans, many of them from Idaho. We are working with the State Department to monitor the safety of these Idahoans and to make sure they have adequate food, water, medical care and proper housing. We hope for their return to the United States as quickly as possible.”
