BOISE, ID – Today, Chairman Jonathan Parker issued the following statement in response to a PAC urging Democrats and Independents to vote in the closed Idaho Republican Primary:
“I find it both alarming and disturbing that a former Republican State Representative has announced the creation of a new political action committee to encourage Democrats to register as Republicans, simply for the sake of voting in the Idaho Republican primary and attempting to have a role in selecting our Idaho Republican Party nominees. This announcement comes despite a federal judge’s decision just five years ago that reaffirmed the basic Constitutional right, guaranteed under the First Amendment, that allows Idaho’s political parties to decide how its candidates will be selected which resulted in Idaho’s current primary election system. We believe that this is a fundamental Constitutional right, a cornerstone of our freedom and democracy.
The 2018 Idaho elections will have ramifications for generations to come. We believe that when the Idaho Republican Party is given the opportunity to nominate candidates chosen by Republicans, our nominees will be able to effectively lead our State into the future to make Idaho ‘the shining city on the hill,’ one that will show the rest of the nation that basic Republican principles in action work.
The Idaho Republican Party is an open and inclusive Party. We pride ourselves on being the Party of ideas which espouse basic conservative Republican principles that we believe are the solution to our nation’s woes. I welcome all individuals to affiliate with the Republican Party who share our common-held beliefs in limited government, personal responsibility, lower taxes, and additional freedoms; however, we just ask that Democrats and Independents not expect to choose our candidates for us.”
